PALATKA, Fla., Dec. 10, 2019 — Buck Lake Conservation Area in Brevard County will expand by slightly more than 29 acres.

The St. Johns River Water Management District’s Governing Board voted today to buy one of the few remaining undeveloped parcels in the area between State Road 46 and the district’s existing Buck Lake boundary.

The property will provide improved access for fire equipment and access to the district’s perimeter fire line for improved prescribed fire application. The additional access will also provide for quicker wildfire response times.

Most of the land is covered in an oak hammock with scattered scrub trees, saw palmetto and gallberry. Water from the property drains to Sixmile Creek and Salt Lake.

The purchase price was $180,000. The property appraised for $205,000 or $7,000 an acre.
