Instructions for installing

Portable Document Format (.pdf) files have become popular for use on the Web by designers for delivering printed documents and forms to users. Unlike HTML, the PDF format can retain the original document’s fonts, text formatting, and graphics. When you’re looking at a file saved as a PDF, you’re seeing an accurate rendition of what the designer intended when the piece was originally printed. Here are some helpful tips on installing and using the free Adobe Reader:

Getting
started…

Acrobat Reader Download Button
  • Use the link at right to go to the Adobe Reader download page.
  • Select your operating system, the product you want and the language you want.
  • Scroll down and click the Download button.
  • On the next page, select the server location to download from.
  • Wait while the install file downloads to your hard drive.
  • Exit, or Quit, your browser and run the install file.

The installer file should have installed the Adobe Reader application AND placed the appropriate plug-in into the correct location to be used by your Web browser.

On the Web,when you find a Portable Document Format PDF Icon (.pdf) file you want to view, copy and or print:

Online Viewing and Printing

  • Simply click on the link pointing to the file.
  • If everything is configured correctly, you should briefly see a window indicating the Adobe Reader program is starting up.
  • The file should appear within the main frame of this Web site, or in a new browser window, with the addition of a new set of controls just under the top edge of the frame (or window).
  • Use these controls to click through the pages of the file, to print the file, or to save the file to your hard drive.

OR

Offline Viewing and Printing (downloading the file)

  • Use your right mouse button to click on the link pointing to the PDF file.
  • You will get a pop-up menu that gives you a number of options. Select “Save Target As…” or “Save This Link As….”
  • Next you should see a directory window which allows you to rename the file, if necessary, and choose the location on your computer for copying the file to.
  • Click “Save.”
  • Off-line, you can launch the Adobe Reader program to view or print the file.

The installer file will not place the appropriate plug-in file where it belongs in order to function properly. You need to do the following:

  • Find the Adobe Reader Folder.
  • Inside, look for a folder called Web Browser Plug-in and move the file called “PDF Viewer” to your desktop.
  • Find the folder for your Web browser, usually either Firefox, Navigator or Internet Explorer.
  • Inside, locate a folder called “Plug-ins.”
  • Move the PDFViewer file into this folder.
  • Restart your browser.

  • Hold down the OPTION key while clicking on the link pointing to the PDF file, or left click on the link but hold the mouse button down, or if you’re using a two-button mouse, right click on the link pointing to the PDF file.
  • You may get a pop-up menu at this point. You should select “Save Target As…” or “Save This Link As….”
  • Next you will see a directory window which allows you to rename the file, if necessary, and choose the location on your computer for copying the file to.
  • Click “Save.”
  • Off-line, you can launch the Adobe Reader program to view or print the file.
