General information
The images now come in two separate versions: true color and color-infrared.
Flight dates were December 2003 through March 2004 (see Metadata for more information).
Image resolution is 1 meter.
Images were developed with a relatively new digital sensor (ADS40); there are no corresponding traditional film products, as with our earlier DOQQs.
The data is tiled by USGS quarterquad. Whether or not you will need a tile index depends on which of the two download methods you choose.
How to view the DOQQs
The GIS Interactive Image Viewer allows you to view and print both the true color and color-infrared images through your browser, without downloading data or obtaining GIS software.
How to download the DOQQs
For true color images: the GIS Interactive Image Viewer
- The Interactive Image Viewer allows for easy downloading without having to consult the DOQQ index. Zoom to your area of interest, then select the “Get Aerials” button to download.
- If your browser has a pop-up blocker, you will need to turn it off before downloading DOQQs or viewing data legends.
- This application is well suited for those who only need data for a small area.
For both true color and color-infrared images: the GIS Data Download Library
- The data is tiled by USGS quarterquad. An index identifying the location and numeric ID of each quarterquad is the layer “Index for Digital Orthorectified Quarterquads” listed under the Index Map section of the data download table.
- This interface is suited for those who need to download many files at once.
File format
Quarterquad-based 2004 DOQQs are available in two compressed formats: JPEG 2000 (.jp2) and Enhanced Compressed Wavelet (.ecw).
- JPEG 2000 is a non-proprietary format based on wavelet compression technology.
- Enhanced Compressed Wavelet is an open standard compression format developed by Earth Resource Mapping Ltd. (http://www.ermapper.com/).
Software requirements for viewing the JPEG 2000 files:
- ArcGIS 9 — no action needed; JPEG 2000 is a recognized raster format
- ArcGIS 8.x — you will need to download an ESRI update:
http://support.esri.com/index.cfm?fa=downloads.patchesServicePacks.
viewPatch&PID=15&MetaID=579 - ArcView 3.x — you will need to download a free extension from LizardTech:
http://www.lizardtech.com/download/dl_options.php?page=third - Imagine 8.7 — no action needed except to repair a bug in the 8.7 release: download fix #24579 for JPEG2000 from Leica
Important Note: There is a known software bug with ArcGIS (ESRI bug I.D. CQ00245993) that may cause image access problems if a large number (approximately 18 or more) of JPEG 2000 images are added to a single ArcMap document (.mxd). For this reason, if you plan to download and view 18 or more images in an ArcMap document, we suggest downloading and using the ECW versions of the 2004 DOQQs and the free plug-in from ERMapper (see below).
Software requirements for viewing the ECW files:
- ArcGIS 9 and ArcGIS 8.x — you will need to download the free plug-in from ERMapper:
http://www.ermapper.com/downloads/download_view.aspx?PRODUCT_VERSION_ID=230 - ArcView 3.x — you will need to download a free extension from ERMapper:
http://www.ermapper.com/downloads/download_view.aspx?PRODUCT_VERSION_ID=143 - Imagine 8.6 and Imagine 8.7 — you will need to download the free plug-in from ERMapper:
http://www.ermapper.com/downloads/download_view.aspx?PRODUCT_VERSION_ID=86 - ARCPAD 6.0 — you will need to download the free plug-in from ERMapper
http://www.ermapper.com/downloads/download_view.aspx?PRODUCT_VERSION_ID=199
Metadata
Each image file has its own metadata, in both XML format (for use with ESRI ArcGIS products) and HTML format.
Images were flown December 2003 through March 2004. Exact flight dates are listed in two places: in the individual metadata file for each image, and in the DOQQ index.
Free image viewers
