Data format
The downloadable GIS data listed in the table below is in one of several formats:
- The most commonly used format is ESRI shapefiles, compressed using WinZip (.zip). Files may be uncompressed using WinZip or other windows-based utilities.
- Imagery: The 2004 DOQQs are in JPEG2000 and ECW format. Most of the older imagery, such as the 2000 DOQQs, is in MrSID format. All are viewable within ESRI ArcMap. For non-ArcMap users, the links below list free software for viewing this data.
- Some grid-based data is in ESRI Arc/Info export files (.e00), compressed using the UNIX compress command (.Z). Files may be uncompressed using Unix or WinZip utilities. The .e00 files must be imported using either ArcInfo, the Import71 utility provided with ArcView3.x software, or the ArcExplorer freeware listed below.
You will need software capable of importing and using GIS data. There are many free data viewing software packages available on the internet. Some are listed below:
ArcGIS Explorer - for viewing all types of GIS data, including the data listed here. In addition, you can connect to free ready-to-use datasets provided by ESRI.
LizardTech GeoViewer 3.0 - for viewing most formats of imagery data (including .SID and .JP2) as well as vector data such as shapefiles.
Express View Browser plug-in - for MrSID files.
ECW and JPEG2000 plug-ins - for CAD and other software.
ArcExplorer Version 1.1 Import Utility - to import .e00 files if you are using ArcExplorer
Downloading data
The location of each data layer is listed in the ‘Download/Disk Location’ column in the table. For large datasets, the ‘Download@’ link will take you to the appropriate directory for downloading the data, which is tiled by county or by USGS quad (imagery). For smaller datasets, the ‘Download@’ link will present you with a single file to download.
For additional information about the format, structure, and spatial reference (projection) of the data, consult the data distribution information page.
Before downloading the new 2004 DOQQs, please read this information.
