Salt Lake Wildlife Management Area

Size:

7,805 acres. Most of this property is jointly owned with the state of Florida.

Location:

Just west of I-95 and south of State Road (SR) 46, three miles west of Mims in Brevard County.

Description:

The property consists of wetlands and uplands and portions of South Lake and Salt Lake, as well as most of Loughman Lake. It contains many examples of native plant communities, though some have been modified or altered by suppression of natural fire regimes, past cattle operations, past forestry practices and other land uses. Land managers are restoring vegetation on the wildlife management area to a more natural state by maintaining pine forests and scrub with prescribed burning.

Wildlife viewing:

The property is home to diverse wildlife populations. Some species include white-tailed deer, feral hog, wild turkey and a variety of birds. Listed species include the Florida scrub jay, bald eagle and gopher tortoise.
