Wekiva River Buffer Conservation Area Photo

This trail at Wekiva River Buffer Conservation Area has an almost prehistoric look and feel to it, as though the scene has remained untouched for millions of years.

Size:

2,570 acres.

Location:

In northwestern Seminole County, six miles east of Sanford. The Wekiva River forms the western boundary.

Description:

The Wekiva River Buffer Conservation Area includes mainly seasonally flooded wetlands in the floodplain between the Wekiva and Little Wekiva rivers. Protection of the area in a natural condition helps preserve the water quality of the Wekiva and Little Wekiva rivers. The District, the state and the Florida Audubon Society have acquired the area primarily through mitigation to protect the resources of the area. The conservation area is within the Wekiva River Protection Area.

Wildlife viewing:

The area supports a diversity of wildlife and is part of a corridor for the listed Florida black bear between the Ocala National Forest and Rock Springs Run State Reserve.
