Wiregrass Prairie Preserve

Size:

1,401 acres. This property is jointly owned with Volusia County.

Location:

Southeast of Lake Ashby in south-central Volusia County, east of State Road (SR) 415 near Osteen.

Description:

The area is partially situated within the Volusia Conservation Corridor, a Florida Forever project. The preserve is comprised of two nearby parcels. One is on the southeast corner of Lake Ashby; the other is less than a mile further southeast. The landscape is a mosaic of upland and wetland communities. Flatwoods (mesic and wet) and basin swamp communities are predominant.

Wildlife viewing:

The property is a high-quality wildlife habitat, both upland and wetland, including habitat for the American alligator, bald eagle, Florida sandhill crane, Florida black bear, Sherman’s fox squirrel and gopher tortoise.

Access:

From SR 415, take Lake Ashby Road to Boy Scout Camp Road. Turn right onto Pell Road and left onto Rudman Road. Parking is on the right. The property is also accessible by water. There is a boat ramp on the northernmost tip of nearby Lake Ashby.
