Lake Lowry Seeps

Location

Lake Lowry Seeps are located on the northeast side of Lake Lowry, about 7 miles north-northeast of Keystone Heights. The seeps are within the Camp Blanding Florida National Guard Military Reservation. Access information can be obtained from the Camp Blanding offices in Starke before visiting the seeps.

Description

The Lake Lowry Seeps originate from the unconfined surficial aquifer. The seeps are located in the bottoms of three wooded ravines that incise the surficial sands of the trail ridge. The surrounding vegetation is composed of sandy soil and oak scrub forest, commonly found on the ridge. The ravines are 40 to 50 feet deep at their heads. The combined flow of the seeps flows to Lake Lowry and becomes part of the Alligator Creek chain flow from Blue Pond to Lake Brooklyn.

Discharge from the combined Lake Lowry Seeps was computed from water level measurements of the stream flow before it empties into Lake Lowry. The difference between the minimum and maximum discharges is 5.98 cubic feet per second (cfs) over the period. The maximum measured discharge of 7.35 cfs occurred in March 1998; the minimum discharge of 1.37 cfs occurred in June 2001. The mean and median discharges for the period 1996 to 2005 are 2.82 cfs and 2.59 cfs, respectively.
