District launches Instagram account

MAITLAND, Fla., Feb. 26, 2016 — The St. Johns River Water Management District is excited to announce the launch of an Instagram account to further engage the community in conversations about sustainable use of Florida’s water and natural systems. The district’s Instagram username is @SJRWMD and will focus on visual storytelling related to the water supply and water resources that encompass the district’s 18-county service area.

“Social media is an important tool that not only allows the district to connect with the community but also showcases the natural systems and projects housed within the approximately 735,500 acres of district-owned land,” said St. Johns River Water Management District Communications Manager Tiffany Cowie. “We are committed to keeping residents and the media informed. The addition of Instagram provides us with another avenue to share valuable information.”

Instagram currently has 150 million monthly active users. The increasingly popular photo-sharing social media app allows users to quickly take, edit and share personal photos.

The district uses social media to promote conservation and recreational opportunities as well as share information about public meetings and events. Additionally, many people regularly turn to social media to ask questions or share photos of scenic vistas and wildlife on district properties.

The addition of an Instagram account comes only months after the district launched a Web-based newsroom that houses photos, videos and news releases available to the media and public. The district also regularly shares information on Facebook and Twitter.
