Newnans Lake Conservation Area North Tract closed this weekend for Operation Outdoor Freedom turkey hunt

PALATKA, Fla., March 24, 2016 — The St. Johns River Water Management District’s Newnans Lake Conservation Area’s North Tract will be closed this weekend, March 25-27, for a special opportunity turkey hunt for World War II, Korea and Vietnam veterans.

The veterans’ outdoor adventure includes guided turkey hunts and camping as part of Operation Outdoor Freedom, a program of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS).

The district is partnering with the Florida Forest Service, which leads the hunt and works with the Wounded Warrior Project and The Military Order of the Purple Heart to identify veterans interested in participating in special opportunity hunts. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is also assisting with the hunt.

The Newnans LakeConservation Area is a 6,504-acre property in Alachua County. The North Tract (south of State Road 26 and west of County Road 234) will be closed to public access during the special hunt and will reopen for recreational activities on Monday, March 28.
