Youth turkey hunt to be held on district lands

PALATKA, Fla., March 10, 2016 — The St. Johns River Water Management District is partnering with the Gainesville chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and Alachua County for a youth turkey hunt March 12-13 at the Longleaf Flatwoods Reserve in Alachua County.

The River Styx tract, located on the southwest portion of the property, will be closed to other public access during this special hunt. Other portions of the property will be open to public access as usual.

The hunt will be led by the NWTF’s “Gator Gobblers” chapter. Youth, accompanied by a parent or guardian, will be paired with an experienced hunting guide for the hunt.

Longleaf Flatwoods Reserve is a 2,856-acre tract located southeast of Gainesville and southwest of Hawthorne. The natural community diversity at Longleaf Flatwoods provides habitat for a wide variety of plant and animal species.
