Educational ‘Lunch and Learn’ series promotes water conservation

PALATKA, Fla., April 27, 2016 — The St. Johns River Water Management District recently hosted a water conservation seminar for staff who want to learn more about water-saving methods and programs. The seminar was part of a “Lunch and Learn” event in honor of Water Conservation Month.

“Our staff are passionate about sustainable use of Florida’s water,” said St. Johns River Water Management District Executive Director Dr. Ann Shortelle. “We embrace educational opportunities like this that not only heighten awareness for water conservation but also promote new ideas for saving water indoors and outdoors.”

The lunchtime session highlighted how individuals can conserve water through various methods, including making small changes to daily routines, planting water-friendly landscapes, and installing water-smart appliances.

Deidre Irwin, district program administrator for Florida Water StarSM, led a group discussion about the Water Star conservation certification program for new and existing homes and commercial developments. Prissy Fletcher, from the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Florida, spoke about implementing waterwise landscaping.

April has been formally recognized as Water Conservation Month in Florida for the past 18 years, as April is typically a dry month when water demands are higher due to springtime planting.
