Media advisory: Join us to see gopher tortoise relocation in Orange County

MAITLAND, Fla., July 14, 2016 — Join the St. Johns River Water Management District as staff members work to relocate an estimated 140 gopher tortoises from their burrows in Taylor Creek levee in Orange County. Finding a new home for the threatened species is necessary as their burrows can cause erosion that compromises the structural integrity of the levee.

After locating burrows, tortoises are captured and transported to a new location before their burrows are closed using a grouting mixture.
