Popular drive to remain closed until further notice
MAITLAND, Fla., March 13, 2020 — The St. Johns River Water Management District’s Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive will be closed as a precaution this evening and will remain closed until further notice in response to concerns about the spread of the novel coronavirus commonly referred to as COVID-19.
The decision to close the drive is in line with the State of Florida’s efforts to lessen transmission of the virus. The popular Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive, which is open on weekends and federal holidays, attracts thousands of visitors each month, with more than 16,000 visitors in February alone.
Other district lands currently remain open to the public, as they are not as prone to large group gatherings. Any additional recreational closures will be shared online and on social media. Gov. Ron DeSantis has issued Executive Order 20-52 declaring a State of Emergency for COVID-19. To keep Florida residents and visitors safe and aware about the status of the virus, the Florida Department of Health is issuing regular updates as information becomes available.
