PALATKA, Fla., March 12, 2020 — The St. Johns River Water Management District is hosting the Gainesville chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) for FWC’s annual youth turkey hunt March 13–14 and women’s hunt on April 4–5 on portions of the district’s Longleaf Flatwoods Reserve and the Newnans Lake Conservation Area in Alachua County.

The River Styx tract, located on the southwest portion of Longleaf Flatwoods Reserve, will be closed to other public access during the hunt. The trail system will not be impacted; only the western portion of the property will be closed.

At the Newnans Lake Conservation Area, the north and south tracts will be closed to other public users during the hunt.

The hunts will be led by NWTF’s “Gator Gobblers” chapter. Youth ages 10–17 with limited or no hunting experience will partner on March 13–14 with a parent or guardian and an experienced mentor to hunt turkeys. The chapter’s Women in the Outdoors program will be held April 4–5 in the same location.

Visit the NWTF Gator Gobblers online for information about women and youth hunts or FWC at myfwc.com/hunting for information about hunting in Florida.
