PALATKA, Fla. June 24, 2022 — Today, the St. Johns River Water Management District has temporarily designated the area along the L-77 West Levee in the Blue Cypress Water Management Area, also known locally as Lake Garcia, as an idle speed zone. The new zoning is necessary to help alleviate the erosion at the base of the levee, which can be caused by the wakes produced by boats utilizing the area.

Repairs, including reinforcements to the levee and shoreline, will need to be completed before the idle speed requirement is lifted. Boaters can expect this change to remain in place for approximately the next two years.

Blue Cypress Water Management Area is located within the Blue Cypress Conservation Area in Indian River County and is one of the most undisturbed areas in the headwaters of the St. Johns River. Visitors can enjoy a variety of recreational activities, including boating, wildlife viewing, fishing, seasonal hunting, bicycling, hiking and camping.
