PALATKA, Fla. May 7, 2024 — The St. Johns River Water Management District announces the temporary closure of the Headwaters Lake boat ramp located within the Fellsmere Water Management Area (FWMA) for essential repairs from June 10 through June 20. This closure is necessary to ensure the safety and functionality of the facility for visitors.

While the Headwaters Lake boat ramp is closed, the Fellsmere Grade Recreation Area (Stick Marsh boat ramp) will remain fully operational. The Fellsmere Grade Recreation Area offers access for both motorized and non-motorized vessels into Stick Marsh and Blue Cypress Conservation Area. Visitors with non-motorized vessels are advised that they can use the Fellsmere Grade Recreation Area to access Headwaters Lake. However, please note that this area is not accessible by vehicle, and visitors will need to transport their vessels approximately 200 ft along a grass levee to reach the launch area from the parking lot.

FWMA, spanning 10,000 acres, serves as a vital floodplain restoration feature in the heart of the Upper St. Johns River Basin. Originally acquired to fulfill various watershed functions such as stormwater storage and treatment, water supply enhancement, and mitigating harmful freshwater discharges to the Indian River Lagoon, FWMA has become a sanctuary for diverse aquatic habitats and abundant wildlife. Its offerings include world-class bass fishing, waterfowl hunting, wildlife observation and boating opportunities.
