The District on Tuesday recognized the recent approval and purchase of more than 78,000 acres of conservation lands throughout Florida, including significant properties within the District. The acquisitions, led by Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet, represent a major step in connecting the Ocala and Osceola national forests and protecting landscapes that define the region.
The District extends its gratitude to Gov. DeSantis, Attorney General James Uthmeier, and Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson for their commitment to conservation. Their leadership has helped secure important lands within the District, such as the Raiford to Osceola Greenway and Camp Blanding to Raiford Greenway.
These purchases close the last major gap in the Ocala-to-Osceola Wildlife Corridor, support local agriculture and help maintain the area’s natural character. The District remains dedicated to working with state and local partners to protect the St. Johns River and its surrounding lands.
“Today marks a huge milestone in Gov. DeSantis’ environmental legacy. These 78,000 acres are the lynchpin of the Ocala-to-Osceola Corridor preservation project,” said Former Florida Sen. and current Chair of the St. Johns River Water Management District Rob Bradley. “This purchase ensures that our rural way of life will be preserved forever. Thanks to Gov. DeSantis, the Legislature and the Cabinet for making this day a reality.”
The District looks forward to continued partnership with state leaders, local governments and the community to care for Florida’s waterways, lands and wildlife.
