Lauren Hall shares her experience and expertise with students, inspiring the next generation of environmental professionals.

Paying it forward: Lauren Hall’s legacy of mentorship

At the District, internships are more than temporary opportunities—they’re pathways to meaningful careers in environmental protection. Few people embody this better than Lauren Hall, who has made mentorship an anchor of her career.

Hall’s story with the District began in 1996, when she joined the Upper Basin program as an intern. What started as a learning opportunity quickly transitioned into a career dedicated to environmental stewardship and progress.

Remembering the guidance she received as a young professional, Hall continues to make it her mission to “pay it forward” by mentoring the next generation.

Over the years, she has guided upwards of 27 interns, offering them more than just technical knowledge, but also valuable life skills. Depending on their focus, interns may learn anything from diverse research methods, environmental communication or even how to safely work on a boat. Equally importantly, Hall instills lessons in responsibility, teamwork and the importance of protecting Florida’s natural resources.

Her impact is evident in success stories like that of Isabel Bennett, a former intern who completed two internship cycles with the District—from May to August 2023 and again from January to May 2024. During her time with the District, Bennett conducted a study on seagrass seed distribution throughout the Indian River Lagoon to help guide restoration efforts. Bennett’s internships not only led to a full-time position but also allowed her to continue advancing this important research, which still supports the District’s mission today.

For Hall, watching interns thrive is deeply rewarding. “When I see them achieve success in this field, it’s like watching my kids grow up and watching them achieve success… I am rooting for them,” she shared.

Through her mentorship, Hall is not only helping interns build confidence and launch their careers, she is also helping grow the future of environmental protection and ensuring that the District’s mission will be carried forward by the professionals she has inspired.
