District advances C-10 project design to protect Indian River Lagoon

The District is moving forward with another major step in restoring and protecting the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) with the planned C-10 Water Management Area (WMA) project in southern Brevard County. The District’s Governing Board approved an agenda item at its June 10 meeting authorizing staff to begin negotiations with an engineering firm to complete the design.

Burrell Lock – temporary closure

The Burrell Lock will be closed beginning Friday, July 18, to facilitate essential construction upgrades. This scheduled closure is part of the District’s ongoing commitment to maintaining and enhancing the efficiency of our waterway systems. During the closure period, access to the Burrell Lock will be restricted to accommodate the necessary construction activities. Burrell Lock is expected to resume operations by this winter. Prescribed burn underway at Black Creek Ravines Conservation Area in Clay County

The District is conducting a 110-acre prescribed burn at Black Creek Ravines Conservation Area to support sandhill restoration and reduce hazardous fuel loads. The burn is taking place on the western side of the property, from the main entrance gate heading north.

The District is conducting a 17-acre prescribed burn at the Micco Water Management Area in Brevard County, located within the Indian River Lagoon and Upper St. Johns River Basin. The burn area is in the central western portion of the property. This prescribed fire is essential for reducing hazardous fuel loads and maintaining the health of fire-dependent natural communities.
