Tucked along the eastern shoreline of Lake George in Putnam and Volusia counties, the nearly 12,000-acre Lake George Conservation Area offers visitors a chance to experience some of Florida’s most scenic and ecologically important landscapes. The St. Johns River Water Management District property protects 3.5 miles of shoreline and contributes to a critical wildlife corridor stretching more than 20 miles along the St. Johns River and Lake George.
The District serves as lead land manager for Lake George Conservation Area in partnership with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the Board of Trustees of the Internal Improvement Trust Fund, Volusia County and the Florida Forest Service.
Whether exploring by foot, bike, horseback or boat, visitors can immerse themselves in the natural beauty of old Florida. The conservation area features multi-use trails for hiking, horseback riding, and biking, as well as primitive tent-only camping (reservations required), fishing and wildlife viewing. Seasonal hunting is allowed with permits from FWC. While there is not a boat launch on the property, users may access the property from Lake George.
A self-guided auto tour also allows visitors to explore the property at their own pace while learning about the diverse habitats and wildlife found throughout the area. Roads are routinely maintained; however, some areas may require four-wheel drive depending on conditions.
Wildlife is one of the property’s defining features. The conservation area provides important habitat for native species, including the gopher tortoise, Florida black bear and bald eagle. In fact, when the property was acquired, it was known for having one of the highest concentrations of bald eagle nests outside of Alaska, with many nests perched in towering pine trees near the wetlands.
From peaceful waterfront views to unforgettable wildlife encounters, Lake George Conservation Area connects visitors to the landscapes, wildlife and outdoor traditions that make Florida special. Plan a visit today: www.sjrwmd.com/lands/recreation/lake-george.
