Newnans Lake Conservation Area: Where adventure and conservation meet

Newnans Lake Conservation Area - Hatchet Creek Tract
Whether you’re exploring a scenic trail, paddling on the lake or looking for wildlife, Newnans Lake Conservation Area offers visitors a chance to experience Florida’s natural beauty firsthand.

Spanning 6,968 acres in Alachua County, the St. Johns River Water Management District property provides a variety of recreation opportunities, including hiking, biking, fishing, horseback riding, canoeing, picnicking and wildlife viewing. Seasonal hunting is also permitted in designated areas with permits issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

As visitors enjoy the property’s diverse landscapes, they are also experiencing an area that plays an important role in protecting Florida’s water resources. Newnans Lake Conservation Area is part of a network of publicly owned conservation lands within the Orange Creek Basin, joining nearby properties such as Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park, Austin Cary Memorial State Forest and the Lochloosa Wildlife Conservation Area. Together, these lands protect diverse upland and wetland habitats, provide critical wildlife corridors and help improve water quality flowing through the Orange Creek and Ocklawaha River basins before ultimately reaching the St. Johns River.

The property encompasses nearly two miles of Newnans Lake shoreline and portions of its major tributaries, Hatchet Creek and Little Hatchet Creek. By protecting floodplain wetlands, basin swamps and marshes, the conservation area helps filter water, reduce runoff and support the ecological health of the region’s waterways.

One of the area’s special highlights is its network of winding creeks, which meander through the property. Keep an eye out for bald eagles, which nest near trails on the North Tract, or take in the towering pines along Hatchet Creek, some reaching nearly 120 feet in height. Osprey, wild turkeys and several varieties of warblers, wading birds and shore birds are also commonly sighted on the property.

Newnans Lake Conservation Area offers visitors a unique opportunity to connect with the landscapes that help protect Florida’s water resources for future generations. Plan your visit to Newnans Lake Conservation Area here: sjrwmd.com/lands/recreation/newnans-lake.
