When it comes to conserving water, sometimes all it takes is a little knowledge and a commitment to doing the right thing.
Many homeowners may be surprised to learn that the largest source of water use at home often isn’t the dishwasher, shower, toilet or washing machine. Instead, it’s the irrigation system outside, watering lawns and landscapes. Ensuring irrigation systems operate efficiently and only when needed is one of the most effective ways to reduce water use and protect Florida’s water resources.
That’s why Billy Mayo, owner of Gator Nation Irrigation in Alachua County, is being recognized as the St. Johns River Water Management District’s newest H2O Hero.
Mayo has spent more than 30 years working in the irrigation industry. Nearly a decade ago, he learned about Alachua County’s Irrigation Level-Up Rebate Program and quickly saw an opportunity to help customers save water while reducing utility costs. Since then, he has made water-efficient irrigation practices a cornerstone of his business.
“Billy was one of our early adopters,” said Eliana Bardi, an environmental planner with Alachua County. “Billy recognized the enormous amount of water waste occurring in landscapes and wanted to be an active participant in correcting that issue.”
Through Florida Water Star training offered by the District and Alachua County, Mayo expanded his knowledge of irrigation efficiency and incorporated water-saving technologies and techniques into his work. Today, he helps businesses and homeowners’ associations identify opportunities to improve irrigation performance and reduce unnecessary water use.
One homeowners’ association Mayo worked with through the Irrigation Level-Up Rebate Program now saves approximately $8,000 annually on its water bill thanks to irrigation system improvements.
“It’s really important for irrigation professionals to lead the cause in the field because they’re often the closest connection to residents and business owners,” said Kraig McLaine, a water conservation coordinator with the District. “Billy brings water conservation directly to homeowners’ properties and business sites, helping customers see how small changes can make a big difference.”
By sharing his expertise and helping customers make smarter irrigation decisions, Mayo is proving that water conservation benefits both the environment and the community. His efforts demonstrate how industry professionals can play a key role in protecting Florida’s water resources while helping residents save money.
