Swamp sunflowers bloom vibrantly at Lake Jesup Conservation Area, creating a stunning display for visitors.

Wetlands and wildflowers await at Lake Jesup Conservation Area

Located in Seminole County, just east of Sanford, the Lake Jesup Conservation Area is a true natural gem, where the region’s diverse ecosystems spark wonder. Spanning almost 6,000 acres within the St. Johns River Water Management District’s Middle Basin, the property features expansive wetlands and serene wooded hammocks, providing habitat for wildlife while inviting visitors to explore, reflect and reconnect with nature.

“Lake Jesup Conservation Area is made up of three separate tracts, North Cameron, Marl Bed Flats and East Lake Jesup, each with its own public access,” says Land Manager Graham Williams. “Together, these tracts provide approximately 10 miles of shoreline protection for Lake Jesup.”

Visitors can enjoy hiking, biking and wildlife viewing throughout the conservation area. Both the Marl Bed Flats and East Lake Jesup tracts feature a network of marked trails that wind through picturesque landscapes. The East Lake Jesup tract includes a short, shaded hike to an observation tower that overlooks the marsh at the lake’s edge. From there, it’s easy to lose yourself in the sight of herons gliding across the sky, egrets stalking the shallows, or an alligator lazily sunning itself on the bank.

One of the area’s most magical moments comes each fall, when swamp sunflowers burst into golden bloom. Beginning in late September/early October, these brilliant flowers carpet the wetlands for about three weeks, creating a breathtaking spectacle that attracts pollinators and feeds local bird species. The Marl Bed Flats tract provides the easiest access to this dazzling display that’s perfect for photographers, nature lovers, or anyone who simply wants to soak in the wonder. Bring your camera, comfortable hiking shoes and a sense of adventure!

Equestrians are welcome too; an annual day-use parking pass grants access through the Marl Bed Flats gate on Oakway, allowing riders to explore trails or park horse trailers for longer adventures. Fishing and boating enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy as well. While the conservation area itself has no boat launch, nearby Seminole County ramps along State Road 46 make Lake Jesup easily accessible.

Lake Jesup Conservation Area is more than just a recreational space; it’s a sanctuary for wildlife and a celebration of nature’s beauty.
