Statement on Brevard and Indian River County Flooding Update

Contrary to reports, there has been no failure of a flood control structure within the C-54 canal. Runoff from the nearby St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park eroded a portion of a canal bank/spoil pile around a culvert that discharged from the preserve into the canal. The runoff from the preserve normally drains to the C-54 canal, therefore the overall flows did not increase into the C-54 canal or the north prong of the St. Sebastian River downstream. Since the event, flows have been receding and currently pose no threat to the public as a result of this erosion event.
