The District is conducting a 72-acre prescribed burn today at Longleaf Flatwoods Reserve in Alachua County to reduce hazardous fuel loads and maintain fire-dependent natural communities. The burn is taking place on the western portion of the property, and the Yellow Hiking Trail will be closed for the duration.

Controlled fire at J.P. Hall Bayard Point Conservation Area enhances habitat, lowers wildfire threat
The District is conducting a 83-acre prescribed burn today at J.P. Hall Bayard Point Conservation Area in Clay County. The burn will be located on Bayard Point bordering the St. Johns River. The burn’s purpose is to reduce hazardous fuel loads and maintain fire-dependent natural communities.

The District, in partnership with Brevard Zoo, recently hosted a Project WET workshop for Brevard Public Schools educators. Held on Feb. 11, the workshop provided teachers with dynamic, hands-on training to inspire and equip them to bring water and climate education into their classrooms, helping to foster a new generation of environmental stewards.

The District is conducting a 6,800-acre prescribed burn today at Three Forks Conservation Area in Brevard County. The burn will be located on the northern portion of the property. The burn’s purpose is to reduce hazardous fuel loads and maintenance of fire-dependent natural communities.

The Newnans Lake Conservation Area North Tract timber sale is 123 acres of second thinning to free up growing space for the best trees. The expiration date is Dec. 19, 2025.

Areas within Silver Springs Forest Conservation Area totaling 330 acres will undergo a pine thinning to reduce tree density.

Lindsey Lane Timber Sale Areas within J.P. Hall Conservation Area totaling 191 acres (see map) will undergo a pine thinning to reduce tree density. This work will improve growing space for the best quality trees, thus maintaining and improving forest health. Please use caution while on the white and yellow trails. Logging equipment is working in the area near the main parking area on State Road 16. Contracts allow the work to be conducted through Jan. 16, 2026. A portion of the work will occur within the Wildlife Management Area and could impact hunting.

February rainfall across the District was below average for the month, with 16 counties receiving less than their typical monthly totals. Meanwhile, eight counties remained above their 12-month rainfall average, while Osceola, Brevard, Indian River, and Alachua counties were at least four inches below their annual norms. Despite these regional variations, aquifer levels remain healthy.
