The district closed two water control structures in its Upper St. Johns River Basin project on Sunday to lessen the potential for flooding in residential neighborhoods along Lake Washington, in Brevard County.

Central recreational public meeting scheduled for Oct. 11

The district is hosting a public meeting to discuss updates to land management and recreation across Lake, Orange and Seminole counties as well as portions of Marion, Volusia and Brevard counties. The meeting will also include an opportunity for public comment.

REDI cost-share project to improve water quality in Indian River Lagoon, Fellsmere

The Indian River Lagoon and cities of Fellsmere and Sebastian in Indian River County will gain improved water quality, thanks in large part to a Rural Economic Development Initiative (REDI) cost-share grant from the district.

District diverts floodwaters in response to high water levels and continued rainfall

The district has opened water control structures on the 11-mile C-54 Canal in Brevard County to reduce the amount of water flowing north in the St. Johns River. The opening is due to flooding on the St. Johns River, as well as ongoing rainfall and predicted rainfall resulting from Tropical Storm Nate.

Moss Bluff closes to navigational access for repairs

The Moss Bluff Lock is closed to boat traffic until further notice. The lock was scheduled for maintenance in September but Hurricane Irma delayed that work.

Newnans Lake Conservation Area North Tract closed Nov. 5–7 for Operation Outdoor Freedom Wounded Warrior hunt

The district’s Newnans Lake Conservation Area will host a guided deer hunt for disabled veterans Nov. 5–7. The north tract of the conservation area will be closed throughout the special Operation Outdoor Freedom hunt.

October’s rainfall amounts were dominated by the heavy nor’easter rain event at the beginning of the month, leaving the 12-month rainfall total for the district 4.4 inches above average.

Three agricultural projects to share $525,500 to reduce nutrient loading, water use

The district Governing Board on Tuesday approved moving forward with contracts for three agricultural projects, totaling nearly $525,500 in cost-share funds, that will reduce water use by 109 million gallons per year and reduce nutrient loading in the Tri County Agricultural Area (TCAA) of Putnam, St. Johns and Flagler counties.
