Sea-level rise

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park

Coastal and low-lying areas are not alone in their planning and response to sea-level rise. Communities can utilize numerous district resources to help achieve resiliency. The most frequently utilized resources that the district provides are data, cost-share funds and guidance. The district is also a member of the Florida Water and Climate Alliance, which is a partnership among stakeholders and scientists working in water resource management, planning and supply operations.

To find out more information on how sea-level rise is being addressed in your community, please contact your local government.

Groundwater quality is monitored in wells across the district. Data collected and published in the status and trends report helps to track the brackish water interface in our groundwater which can have impacts to drinking water supplies. As salt concentrations increase in a utility’s production well, alternative treatment processes such as membrane filtration or reverse osmosis may be required to meet drinking water standards. Coastal communities south of Flagler County have been faced with elevated chloride concentrations since the early 1950s and have been responding accordingly to provide drinking water for their residents.

District dollars help coastal communities with numerous projects that help their communities become more resilient. These cost-share funds are available for local governments, utilities, agriculture and other stakeholders and projects that relate to addressing one or more of four core missions of the district: water supply, water quality, natural system restoration and flood protection. In coastal communities these projects provide added benefit when considering the potential impacts of sea-level rise.
