Water conservation is a daily and year-round commitment for us.

At the St. Johns River Water Management District, we’re focusing extra attention on water conservation during April as we join others across the state and nation in recognizing Water Conservation Month. The annual observance is held each April — typically a dry month in Florida — because outdoor watering is most often the biggest use of water in a home. This is also the time of year when many in our communities start their spring planting and sprucing up yards.

So, as you gear up to enhance your outdoor living spaces, now would be a great time to check your automatic sprinkler system to make sure it is functioning properly to conserve water. Here are some tips to help:

  • Ensure your system is set to follow watering restrictions, if you need to water at all.
  • Follow Florida law, which requires that all automatic sprinkler systems installed after May 1991 have a functioning rain sensor shut-off switch which senses when a preset amount of rain has fallen.
  • Install the most water-efficient spray heads designed for different uses (turf areas, planting beds, etc.).
  • Fix any broken or misdirected sprinkler heads.
  • Check that water is only spraying on the landscape.
  • Look for leaks and clogs.

Did you know? We encourage conservation through our watering rules, Consumptive Use Permitting program, water supply planning efforts, educational and outreach programs, and our cost-share program that helps fund projects designed to improve water efficiencies in our local communities.
