Beneath the surface of the Indian River Lagoon, seagrass meadows not only provide critical habitat for fish and wildlife but also serve as an important indicator of the lagoon’s health. Now, the public can explore the story of seagrasses in the lagoon through a new interactive StoryMap from the St. Johns River Water Management District (District).

The Story of Seagrass StoryMap combines maps, data, photos and videos to help visitors understand the importance of seagrass, how scientists monitor changes over time and the work underway to support recovery throughout the lagoon.

“Seagrass is essential to the health of the Indian River Lagoon, and understanding where it is growing, declining or recovering helps guide restoration and management decisions,” said St. Johns River Water Management District Environmental Scientist Dr. Lorae Simpson. “This StoryMap gives the public an opportunity to explore the science behind our work and see how monitoring, research, restoration projects and partnerships are helping support the lagoon’s recovery.”

Visitors can explore the lagoon’s unique sublagoons, learn more about changes in seagrass coverage over time and explore how aerial mapping, in-water monitoring and seed bank research help scientists better understand seagrass trends.

The StoryMap also highlights the District’s work with local, state, federal and academic partners on restoration projects and research efforts aimed at improving water quality, restoring natural systems and creating conditions that support seagrass recovery. Through interactive maps, data and visuals, users can explore the connection between healthy seagrass meadows and a thriving lagoon ecosystem.
