The St. Johns River Water Management District is conducting a 605-acre prescribed fire on the northwestern portion of Hal Scott Regional Preserve and Park in Orange County, situated in the Middle St. Johns River Basin. Its purpose is to reduce hazardous fuel loads, improve habitat for the red-cockaded woodpecker and maintain fire dependent natural communities.

Beneath the surface of the Indian River Lagoon, seagrass meadows not only provide critical habitat for fish and wildlife but also serve as an important indicator of the lagoon’s health. Now, the public can explore the story of seagrasses in the lagoon through a new interactive StoryMap from the St. Johns River Water Management District.

The St. Johns River Water Management District is conducting a 680-acre prescribed fire on the northern portion of Hal Scott Regional Preserve and Park in Orange County, situated in the Middle St. Johns River Basin. Its purpose is to reduce hazardous fuel loads, improve habitat for the red-cockaded woodpecker and maintain fire dependent natural communities. Crews will also burn the remaining portion of a management unit where a 300-acre wildfire occurred Monday night, helping secure the entire area and reduce the risk of future wildfire activity.

The St. Johns River Water Management District has opened the public comment period for the draft 2026 Middle St. Johns River Basin Plan.

The District is conducting a 1,230-acre prescribed fire on the western portion of Hal Scott Regional Preserve and Park in Orange County, situated in the Middle St. Johns River Basin. Its purpose is to reduce hazardous fuel loads, improve habitat for the red-cockaded woodpecker and maintain fire dependent natural communities.

Operations and Maintenance and their contractor will be installing a pipe across McDonald Canal Road next week. The road will be closed to all traffic from Lake Level Canal Road to the Loop Trail Spur (between Duda Crossroads and the North Shore Trailhead). See attached map. This will not affect the Loop Trail or the Wildlife Drive.

The St. Johns River Water Management District will participate in a joint workshop with Southwest and South Florida water management districts, on the draft 2026 minimum flows and levels priority list and schedule.

Students across the District will have new opportunities to explore Florida's waterways, conduct scientific research and connect with the environment through the Blue School Grant program.

The Headwaters Boat Ramp, including the kayak launch, at the Fellsmere Water Management Area (FWMA) will be temporarily closed August 3–6 as the District continues the series of scheduled monthly closures to support maintenance and habitat restoration activities.
August 5, 2026
Operations and Maintenance and their contractor will be restoring rip-rap along the lakeshore levee for portions of the Lake Apopka Loop Trail. A section of the Loop Trail will be closed from Lust Road, just north of the Pump House, to just west of Laughlin Road. The project will take up to two months. Please use the detour to avoid the work zone. Work will be Monday through Thursday and will not affect the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive.

While recent rainfall has brought welcome relief to portions of northeast and central Florida, the St. Johns River Water Management District (District) is reminding residents, businesses and large water users that drought recovery will take time.

Rainfall across the St. Johns River Water Management District (District) remained below average in July, with drought conditions continuing across portions of western and northern counties. Although southern areas experienced modest improvements in groundwater levels, the majority of the Upper Floridan aquifer remained below the normal range. Continued below-average rainfall and low groundwater levels highlight the importance of water conservation as the District continues to monitor drought conditions.
